Used Cars Import Rules and Regulations in the United Kingdom

Age Restriction

There is a no age restriction on the import of used Japanese cars in the UK.

Right-Hand Drive Vehicle

Importing both left- and right-hand drive is permissible in the UK. 

Inspection

Japanese used vehicles need to pass the Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) or Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) Test. These tests are mandatory to ensure that a vehicle meets safety standards when running on the road. Also, compulsory inspection of the MOT is carried out by a testing center approved by the government to check the vehicle’s roadworthiness. 

Since the first registration of a vehicle, it goes through a MOT test every third year. 

Import Duties and Taxes on Used Cars in the UK

Duty 

On used cars - 10%

On commercial vehicles and pickups – 20%

VAT 

The standard VAT rate of 20% is currently applicable. 

Ownership tax is applied on passenger cars and commercial vehicles depending upon carbon dioxide emission, axles, and weight, respectively.

Test Required on Used Vehicles in the UK Depending Upon Their Age

  • SVA/ESVA test for vehicles below 3 years 

  • SVA/ESVA test and MOT test for vehicles between 3 to 10 years 

  • MOT test only for vehicles more than 10 years old 

If the vehicles pass the mentioned tests, only then can they be registered in the UK.

Documents Required for Import of Vehicle in the UK

  • Bill of Lading 

  • ID card (as proof of identification) 

  • Commercial invoice from the supplier 

  • Driving license 

  • Original export certificate 

  • Translated export certificate 

  • Cost of vehicle tax 

  • Motor insurance from a British company 

  • Deregistration certificate 

  • Trader’s Unique Reference Number (TURN) for commercial importers

Import Duty Information

  • Import duty is 10% of the cost + freight (Add the FOB cost and the shipping cost together & calculate 10% of total amount).
  • VAT is 20% of FOB, Freight & Import Duty ( Add the FOB cost, shipping cost and import duty together & then take 20% of total amount).
  • Cars manufactured within the preceding 10 years are required to have the "IVA (SVA) Test Certificate" submitted with the application to the DVLA.
  • If your car does not undergo the IVA Test or doesn't achieve the required standards, you will not secure a Ministers Approval Certificate and will not be able to register your vehicle for use on UK roads. There are extra charges for IVA test.
  • Specialized Shipping & Clearing Agents can manage the car registration process all required associated documents are included such as a Certificate of Mutual Recognition (or proof of exemption), Certificate of Conformity, Ministers Approval Certificate.
  • * Disclaimer: Duties and VAT may vary by the HM Revenue & Customs department.
