Used Cars Import Rules and Regulations in the Tanzania

Age Restriction

There is no age limit for importing used cars from Japan to Tanzania. However, when importing a used car that is 8 years old or more, calculated from the year of manufacture, an additional excise tax will be imposed.

Previously, the age limit was 10 years, but on July 1st, 2023, the parliament announced a new age restriction of 8 years instead of 10 years.

If the car is older than 8 years, it will face additional excise duty upon importation.
Non-utility vehicles are charged at the rate of 25%
Utility vehicles are charged at the rate of 5%

Right-Hand Drive Vehicles

Tanzania is a left-hand traffic country, which means that only right-hand drive vehicles are allowed in the country.

Inspection

Before the cars from Japan can be used on the roads of Tanzania, they must go through a rigid safety check. The Japan Automobile Appraisal Institute (JAAI) is in charge of this process. They inspect the vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards and are safe to drive. After passing the inspection, these cars get a certificate that allows them to be shipped to Tanzania.

Import Duties and Taxes on Used Cars in Tanzania

There are strict rules about taxes for imported cars. The taxes are applied based on the engine size of the car. The rates are as follows:

Up to 2000cc:

Import duty 25%
VAT 20%

Above 2000cc

Import duty 25%
VAT 20%

For commercial units, including buses, lorries, passenger vans, and pickups

Import duty 15%
VAT 20%

Excise Duty

The government charges this tax on vehicles imported from other places.

If the engine is not bigger than 1000cc - No excise duty
If the engine is between 1000cc and 2000cc - 5% excise duty
If the engine is bigger than 2000cc - 10% excise duty
