Used Cars Import Rules and Regulations in the Dominican Republic

Age Limit

  • Cars should not be more than 10 years old.

  • Busses should not be more than 7 years old.

  • Lorries should not be more than 10 years old.

Right-Hand Drive Vehicles

Import of right-hand Drive vehicles is allowed in the country.

Inspection

No inspection is required on the import of used cars in Dominican Republic.

Import Duties and Taxes on Used Cars in Dominican Republic

  • Import duty- 40% of the custom value 

  • Customs Service Charge (CSC) - 3% of the custom value 

  • Environmental Subcharges- $3,000 per unit ( vehicles with age 5 years or older). Vehicles less than 5 years - 1% of the custom value 

  • Excise duty- 28%

  • VAT - 15%

Points You Need to Consider When Importing Vehicle in the Dominican Republic

  • No more than one vehicle can be imported per individual into the country. 

  • The number of cylinders in all imported automobiles should not exceed six.

  • Taxes and duties apply to motorcycles.

  • Any vehicle being imported into the country must have been owned by the importer for at least one year before importation. 

  • Being a new resident, you can import a vehicle with little to no duty if you owned the vehicle for at least 2 years and the vehicle is less than 5 years old. 

  • An importer needs to be present in the country for customs clearance of any vehicle.
