Age Restriction

Vehicles older than 10 years cannot be imported to Zimbabwe.

Commercial vehicles, including haulage trucks, tractors, and equipment used in construction and mining, are exempted from this age restriction. For the importation of vehicles older than 10 years, an import license from the commerce ministry and industry is required. Commercial vehicles, including specialized vehicles used in mining and agriculture, do not require an import license.

Right-Hand Drive Vehicle

Importation of right-hand drive vehicles is allowed in Zimbabwe. An exception is provided in the case of fire engines and ambulances.

Inspection

EAA inspection is mandatory for the vehicles imported into Zimbabwe from 1 June 2022.

Import Duties and Taxes on Used Cars in Zimbabwe

Import Duty 

For non-commercial vehicles

  • Import duty 60% -80%

  • VAT 15%


For vehicles with engines smaller than 1500cc

  • Import duty 40%

  • VAT 15%


For passenger cars and station wagons, 

  • Import duty 25% - 40%

  • VAT 15%


For import of buses or mini-buses 

  • Import duty 0% - 60%

  • VAT 15%

Condition for Tax Exemption in Zimbabwe 

Physically Handicapped People

Physically handicapped individuals are exempted from customs duty. However, they are required to pay VAT based on the value of the vehicle plus insurance and freight and any other charges incurred during delivery to Zimbabwe. 

Returning Residents 

Zimbabwean residents residing outside Zimbabwe for more than 24 months. 

Temporary Import Permit 

Individuals who are not residents of Zimbabwe can bring foreign-registered vehicles into the country. They are also exempted from paying import duties and taxes.
