Age Restriction

There is no age restriction on used cars for import in France.

Left/Right-hand Drive Vehicle

All the vehicles imported from Japan must be Left-Hand Drive (LHD)

Inspection Policy

In France, no inspection is required for imported cars.

Import Duties and Taxes

Import Customs: Cars 5-10%.

VAT: (CIF + Import Customs) x 19. 6%

Registration fee: EUR 34 per horsepower for cars less than 10 years old and half of it for cars older than 10.

If the vehicle is new and less than 6 months old or has done less than 6000 km, then the VAT is charged on the invoiced price; otherwise, it is reduced according to the age of the vehicle.

VAT is levied on imported cars outside the European Union based on their value and country of origin. However, if cars from the EU have the right documents, there is no import duty.

On settlement or confirmation of VAT exemption, the importer is issued a customs certificate (Certificat de Douane 846A) for registration, which should be done within three months from the date of import.

Documentation Required on Vehicle Import

Identity Proof

Proof of Address (copy of property documents, tenancy agreement, bill, insurance receipt, etc.).

A certified copy of the foreign registration certificate.

Copy of the attestation of Conformity that is either issued by the manufacturer or agent.

The certificate of purchase and the customs clearance certificate from the Centre des Impots.

If the car is older than four years, it must have a French Controle technique (technical Tested) certificate; this must have been done within six months but not more than that (two months in case contre-visite or re-test is required).
